Some of our current commercial aquaponic growers include: commercial and family farms, colleges, K-12 schools, and nonprofit organizations. Commercial systems start at 160 square feet of growing space and can be scaled-up to provide acres of growing space. Commercial system designs can be modified to: maximize vegetation and/or aquatic production, extend the growing season, meet ADA accessibility standards, and facilitate educational and research applications. Symbiotic commercial systems are ideal for media-based and deep water culture (floating raft) aquaponics and may be used simultaneously. Our system uses a patent-pending design that is made in the U.S. from high-quality materials. Filters and pumps come with manufacturer warranties, while the grow beds and racking systems are made to last 20 years and beyond. Growbeds and racking systems come in a variety of colors, though we recommend our galvanized racking system for outdoor use. Full, turn-key service (from consultation and greenhouse builds to flipping the system "on-switch") is available. The average construction time of the Symbiotic commercial system varies between 1 to 2 weeks, though larger systems require more time. All construction is conducted by highly-skilled and trained craftsmen paid at fair, living wages. When developed as a small business to serve local and regional markets, aquaponics can provide economic stimulus, boosting local economies, and providing jobs. Other applications of commercial aquaponics focus on the community aspect providing food insecure neighborhoods, food deserts, and drought-ridden areas with access to nutritious food. Still, some communities use aquaponics for the social and mental health benefits, noting the rehabilitative and positive psychological gains that are associated with growing food.
Because of the extensive social benefits and the ability to grow food in a responsible, more efficient way, aquaponics is an increasing part of the local movement. Consumers are becoming more selective of their food and the demands for natural, responsibly-sourced and nutrient-rich food is increasing. Farmer's markets are enjoying a resurgence in popularity, and even large grocery chains are choosing local produce suppliers to meet their customers' needs.
